Playing 3rd on Saturday at the Restaurant Airport party is Scott Beowulf (10pm @ The Delancey)…
Scott Beowulf
There’s not much to say about Scott Beowulf that you can’t figure out from the name. They’re a band of the ridiculous variety. It is important to point out that John is in this band so he’ll be playing two sets back to back. Scott plays (and you always refer to this band as just ‘Scott’ as if it’s just one person) bizarre dance music with creepy lyrics. This combination somehow coalesces in a way that forces you to move your feet and forget your inhibitions….or maybe that’s just the zombie-infected bloodsucking unicorns at a Spanish discoteque talking. Either way, it’s sure to be mighty fun.

The Bronze Fondue doesn’t mess around. They are famous for their out of this world stage antics. They play country music from the future, when there will be no country music.* The BF, like Luff, were on the top of the list of bands we needed to have on one of our release shows.
Nicholas was DL’s chemistry teacher at NYU. Garrett knows Damien who used to play in a band with James (the butterfly). Over the past few years, Bronze Fondue has hosted an amazing series of music/ entertainment nights in art spaces around the lower east side. A lot of our friends have participated in them. If you haven’t been you should find out where the next one is and GO! because these guys…they know how to throw a party.

I think Louie first introduced us to Luff. I could be totally wrong about this, but I think that one of the members bartended at a bar that Louie used to frequent…somehow he got ahold of their album and played it for us. When we came to pick bands for these shows they were at the top of our list because we loved the album. I’m really excited to have them start out the show on Saturday, especially because I hear that they have their own video artist that they’re collaborating with, which sounds awesome.

We contributed a song to our friends at Cooling Pie Records’ compilation LP titled Crust Never Sleeps. It might be our shortest song ever… You can download the entire album here and give our track a listen below:
Also features songs by: Pocketknife, KC Quilty, Ava Luna, Casiorossi, and a bunch of other awesome people.
Our “Liner Notes”:
“Two friends, super drunk, having a pointless argument… One of them bends something the other has said and an explosion occurs… So all of this chaos is happening for no real reason. Everyone in the bar want’s to be a part of it so it becomes this crazy event.
I have a poorly organized train of thought… Originally I was inspired by the Dick Diver bar scene from Tender is the Night. The one where he gets beat up by a mob of Italians.”
Recorded by DL Tashjian and Jared O’Connell at Jared’s house the weekend of March 28-29th.
This will be the last post in this series until the week of June 13th, when we’ll be celebrating the release of our next EP, Restaurant Airport. Mean Creak will be playing after us tomorrow night at The Delancey.
How A Brief Smile knows Mean Creak: I don’t think anyone of us have actually met them but we know them through Chris from the band Aberdeen City, who recorded our (by our I mean John Louie and I) roommate’s new album at his studio in Boston where he also recorded Mean Creak’s new album. [Louie and John met some of these guys when up there working on Kosuke's album...my bad] Chris actually also went to the same high school I went to and lived down the street from me. Anyways, we listened to Mean Creak and said “WE NEED TO HAVE THEM PLAY A SHOW WITH US” and Louie made it happen. Give them a listen (these are off the new album…):

Next up is Akudama, who will be playing at 8:45 at our release show on Friday at the Delancey.
How A Brief Smile knows Akudama: Calvin from Akudama was in the same program at NYU as me for a while. I also think that they’re originally from Connecticut, or at least Calvin was, and so is 3/5 of A Brief Smile. Calvin hooked me up with a copy of Flying Over Morning, their album from 2004 which I, in turn, played for other members of A Brief Smile to intense applause. Also, when I was younger, I knew this kid Mike from summer camp who I think knew Calvin from high school. Small world…sorta.
