Why is Boston called Beantown, you might be asking:
Back in colonial days, a favorite Boston food was beans baked in molasses for several hours. Back then, Boston was sort of awash in molasses - it was part of the “triangular trade” in which slaves in the Caribbean grew sugar cane to be shipped to Boston to be made into rum to be sent to West Africa to buy more slaves to send to the West Indies. Even after the end of this practice, Boston continued as big rum producing city - the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 (which killed 21), ocurred when a tank holding molasses for rum production exploded.
Today, Boston baked beans are something of a rarity - there are no companies in the city making it and only a few restaurants serve it. If you want to try it yourself, here’s a Boston baked beans recipe
Spinning all night tomorrow will be DJs Rachael and Pat, two of our very favorite friends and bloggers:
Rachael runs this blog: The Underrated Blog
Rachael was the first person ever to write about A Brief Smile. We did an interview with her back before anyone knew what a ‘blog’ was. Remember ‘Zines’ kids!!! Well she single handedly ran Underrated Magazine before taking it digital a few years ago. She is also an avid Lost fan, like DL and Jared, and for the past three seasons, she has been brightening up our mornings with the “lost link of the day.”
Pat too is a fellow lost fan and member of the LLOTD email chain. His blog is super rad. Obviously, he does not toast his Pop Tarts®. He just completely ignores the directions on the box, opens up that weird space-age silvery plastic packaging and eats away. I have yet to ask him what his favorite flavor is. We played Pat’s CMJ showcase in 2007. He also has a showcase this friday at Public Assembly as part of the Northside Festival.
What to expect from their DJ sets:
Pure 90s hits mixed in with a myriad of current tunes that will make you want to ‘put on your dancing shoes.’ Oh and Rachael will probably play this song: YouTube - Weeds Season 5 Episode 1 - Flash Mob Scene
Playing 3rd on Saturday at the Restaurant Airport party is Scott Beowulf (10pm @ The Delancey)…
Scott Beowulf
There’s not much to say about Scott Beowulf that you can’t figure out from the name. They’re a band of the ridiculous variety. It is important to point out that John is in this band so he’ll be playing two sets back to back. Scott plays (and you always refer to this band as just ‘Scott’ as if it’s just one person) bizarre dance music with creepy lyrics. This combination somehow coalesces in a way that forces you to move your feet and forget your inhibitions….or maybe that’s just the zombie-infected bloodsucking unicorns at a Spanish discoteque talking. Either way, it’s sure to be mighty fun.

The Bronze Fondue doesn’t mess around. They are famous for their out of this world stage antics. They play country music from the future, when there will be no country music.* The BF, like Luff, were on the top of the list of bands we needed to have on one of our release shows.
Nicholas was DL’s chemistry teacher at NYU. Garrett knows Damien who used to play in a band with James (the butterfly). Over the past few years, Bronze Fondue has hosted an amazing series of music/ entertainment nights in art spaces around the lower east side. A lot of our friends have participated in them. If you haven’t been you should find out where the next one is and GO! because these guys…they know how to throw a party.

Also features songs by: Pocketknife, KC Quilty, Ava Luna, Casiorossi, and a bunch of other awesome people.
Our “Liner Notes”:
“Two friends, super drunk, having a pointless argument… One of them bends something the other has said and an explosion occurs… So all of this chaos is happening for no real reason. Everyone in the bar want’s to be a part of it so it becomes this crazy event.
I have a poorly organized train of thought… Originally I was inspired by the Dick Diver bar scene from Tender is the Night. The one where he gets beat up by a mob of Italians.”
Recorded by DL Tashjian and Jared O’Connell at Jared’s house the weekend of March 28-29th.
